Spray of Great Yarmouth wants to come home.
54' LOA, 40'LOD, approx 20 tons displacement Spray
was built of the finest materials by Fellows & Co of Great Yarmouth in 1910.
Copper fastened 1½"
pitchpine below waterline (copper sheathed in 1972) & 1½" mahogany topsides on 4x4" sawn oak frames at
20" centres (sistered in high stress areas) with steam bent frames between; she has a very dry hull and
it is believed that all hull planking is original ! She was copper sheathed in 1972. Coach and cockpit
coamings are teak; cockpit is teak, oak, and mahogany with fiberglassed marine ply sole. Decks are yellow
pine and Douglas fir, bronze and iron fastened. Pitch pine mainmast, age unknown assumed to be original.
Topmast is Douglas fir, 1996. Douglas fir mizzen stepped 1994. All other spars believed to be Douglas
fir.
Much sympathetic maintenance work has been done including: Bronze skin fittings, rudder
tube, high grade stainless steel rudder pintles and plates, silicon bronze chain plates and bolts new
1994. Mast fittings and galvanized standing rigging replaced 1992 (Bronze rigging screws). Rewired
2003 with marine-grade cable. New heavy-duty 12-volt starter battery 2003, plus 12-volt deep-cycle
house battery, wired to selector switch. New VHF radio & depth sounder 2003. New paraffin nav lights,
anchor light & interior lamps (electric cabin lights too) 1988 Perkins 4108 4-cylinder 47hp diesel
inboard. Newage hydraulic reduction gearbox. Starter motor professionally overhauled 2003. 15 US gallon
diesel tank plus 2x85 US gallon water tanks. Gaff main is in fair condition, gaff mizzen excellent.
One jib and working staysail are older; second jib is fair and overlapping staysail is virtually new.
Light-air genoa and topsail are fair. Mainsail and mizzen have covers; three bags for other sails.

tops for storage underneath on starboard. Main saloon has two 30”-wide settees, one 6ft and the other
8ft long, both with ample storage underneath. Leather-topped chart table has a compartment made for
refrigeration underneath. Oak saloon table with mahogany base. Saloon cabinetry is all solid hardwood;
some in forward cabin is veneer on solid pine. Aft saloon galley area has over 7ft headroom; remainder
of saloon 6ft. Propane catalytic cabin heater (not connected). Galley has gimbaled 2-burner propane
stove with grill and oven, and single stainless sink. Hand-pumped water. All domestic gear included.
Pump-type toilet, with LectraSan waste disposal unit (installed 2003) & stainless sink with hand pump.
50-lb Manson (CQR type) anchor with 250ft (75m) of 3/16” chain and 300ft (100m) of rope. 50-lb Danforth
stainless steel storm anchor. Simpson Lawrence manual anchor windlass.
Much spare equipment including
brass clock & barometer, engine consumables & rigging spares, flares, GPS, 3 steering compasses, cockpit
rain covers, fibreglass tender with sailing gear, original halyard winch (not installed), Rogerson autopilot
(not installed age & condition unknown).
Spray has been lovingly maintained and sympathetically
and respectfully upgraded as befits her age, to retain her original character and charm with unnecessary
‘modernisation’ being avoided. She has been hauled annually for cleaning and antifouling. She was designed
to withstand the rigours of the North Sea and properly trimmed, she tracks steadily and sails comfortably
upright in gale conditions. Her motion at sea is very comfortable. The split sail plan allows many
variations of canvas and the yawl rig facilitates trimming and manoeuvres under sail. She is easy on
the helm and lies to her anchor superbly. She is easily sailed by two people and has regularly been
sailed singlehanded. She was sailed to NZ in the 70s and currently lies on a mooring in Auckland.
Asking $NZ75,000 (approx £27,000 go to www.xe.com for current exchange rates). Shipping to Tilbury
can be arranged: approximate cost $US30,000 (approx £20,000). This is an excellent price for a beautiful,
practical, classic English gaffer in very original condition. More photos & further details on request
from andrew.stobbart@btinternet.com.
