Ardglass, County Down, the place
|
|
Ardglass, with its magnificent harbour, is one of three major fishing ports in Northern Ireland.
Considerable improvements have been taking place over recent years making Ardglass one of the safest
small harbours on the east cost of Ireland. Quite a large number of fishing boats operate from the port
all year round and return each evening with their catches of prawn, cod, whiting, monkfish, plaice and
of course the world famous 'Ardglass Herring'. Recent developments in the town have included
a new fifty-five berth marina for local and visiting yachts, thus bringing a new dimension of leisure
boating to the area. The marina is ideally sited just, south of the Strangford Lough entrance, enabling
yachts to berth and wait for a favourable tide into Strangford Lough. It also makes an ideal stopover
for yachts on passage North or South in the Irish Sea. For those who just wish to sit and relax, Ardglass
has everything you could want, quiet views overlooking the harbour, with all the comings and goings of
the commercial fishing fleets and pleasure craft arriving from all over Europe and occasionally from
even further afield. When hunger or thirst take grip of you then there are numerous public houses
where a quiet drink is on offer and you may even happen on a traditional; music session in a corner.
For a bite to eat, the village offers a complete choice and varied menus from a list of top class restaurants,
guest houses and fast food outlets suited to all tastes and pockets.
