NEW LOOK OGA PHOTOGRAPHIC
COMPETITION
The Winners for 2008 are displayed on the next pages
A new competition will be held in
2009, so keep your cameras handy.
Again, there will be two categories
of photographs:
'Sailing Gaffers' (or variations of
course),
'Sailing Shots' (anything else that
is sailing related)
· Send digital images to viv.head@talk21.com ideally around 1mb

· Prints should be sent to Gaffer's Log Editor,
Keith Watson
· Closing date for entries is 1st
December 2009
· Judging will take place during December
and the results announced at the AGM in January. In 2009 we hope to be
able to offer members the chance to participate in a web based voting process
during December. Finalists will be displayed on the web site and the winning
photos will be displayed at the AGM and appear in Gaffers
Log.
· Cash Prizes (or at least, cheques) will
be awarded for the first, second and third photographs in each category. A
whopping £75 first prize, £50 for second and £25 for third.
Rules of
Entry
· The competition is open to
OGA members. Entries must have been taken by the member or their immediate
family/crew participating in gaffering activity. Images from any other source
should not be entered.
· Some
cropping to exclude unwanted areas of an image is acceptable but no other image
manipulation is permitted.
· The image should be
renamed with a selected title, then submitted by email, together with the
member's name and membership number, it's title and a brief description of what,
when and where it was taken.
· There is no limit to the
number of entries submitted by any one member but each image should be
accompanied by the appropriate information. (Linking images to the correct
'owner' is imperative of course!)
· The spirit of the
competition is that it is open to all members on an equal basis. We do want to
encourage good quality images of course and therefore the use of good camera
equipment. But essentially, it remains an amateur competition and professional
users of expensive equipment and/or techniques are asked to consider whether
their entries would fall within this ethic of fair play.
· Entries may be displayed
on the Association's web site, printed in Gaffers Log or used for the
Association's boat archive.
Digital photography is not
expensive these days and cameras are becoming ever more reliable. It is well
known that digital technology and water, especially salt water, do not make a
good mix and neither does sand for that matter. But a simple plastic bag kept in
the cockpit can be a very effective way of keeping spray out. So there is no
excuse for not firing off a few quick shots when you spy a good looking gaffer
coming up astern. And that's the other huge advantage of digital cameras in
action situations of course, they allow the rapid taking of multiple shots and
the luxury of selecting the best one in the comfort of home (or the bar) later.
So do please take your camera with you on board and fire a shot or two across
the other fellow's bows.
We want the OGA photo
competition to be a vibrant part of the Association. And as an international
Association, the competition is of course open to members wherever you live. All
we need are those sublime salty images of ships and the sea. Gaffers- yes of
course, but classics too- and the trailer section and all those ones of people
simply out there enjoying themselves messing about in boats or on the quayside.
So lets have plenty of choice and make it hard for the judges- there's real
money prizes to be won, as well as the satisfaction of seeing your photos on the
website or in Gaffers Log and who knows, it may even brighten up the
AGM!
Please send in your photos
and remember, the closing date is the 1st of December. If you need a reminder of
the rules or procedure, email Viv at viv.head@talk21.com
Good
Luck!
