The Solent
Area covers the South coast waters from Brighton to Weymouth and includes the Isle of
Wight. The sailing experience in these waters are varied and there
are in general two tides a day in the area
Principal Solent Harbour information for visiting
gaffers:
Chichester Harbour provides
a unique area of safe sailing and anchoring within the region. There are main channels feeding inland
to Emsworth, Bosham and to Chichester.,
Westwards
along coast we have Portsmouth, with its naval connection and
commercial traffic, whilst also catering for the sailing faternity. And further
along the coast the Hamble River feeds into the Southampton Water,
with interesting sailing up to Marchwood
Beaulieu and
Lymington provide other safe havens on the mainland coast, and then out beyond
the Needles westwards to Poole Harbour providing sailing for all types of
boats and anchorages.
The Isle of Wight has numerous inlets and waterways to venture
up giving an added dimensions to the Solent
Area.
The Old
Gaffers Association in the region enjoys the challenge of running rallies and
races in these waters, We try to
arrange a visit to most of the principal harbours in the area during the season
and we are always welcome wherever we go.
We cater for
all sorts of ‘Old Gaffer’ racing, small and large, and we like to include
the trailer section wherever we
go.
There are
numerous private marinas in the harbours that would welcome Old Gaffers and the
local Harbour Master will give local information relating to berthing, fuel and other
supplies..
